The houses stretch all along the old Roman road which went from Cassel to Thiennes.
The origin of the village dates from the Franks according to its Germanic name which was written Harmingesele, which would mean the residence Zeel of people (genitive -ing-) of a certain Harmo.
The church is a real hallekerke (church-hall) with three naves divided by a double colonnade supporting wood vaults which are the same height. Built in Gothic style, it dates from the 16th and 17th centuries for a big part of its structure. But the front, with ferruginous sandstones, comes from the primitive Romanesque shrine. The chapel of the lords of Wissche is also oldest: built in 1425, it was an independent building for a long time before being gathered to the church by arcades. The chancel of the church is said to date from 1567. All the building was renovated in 1615, date carved in the front, just after the political and religious unrests of the end of the 16th century.
The baptismal fonts, crowned with gadroons, date from the 17th century. The paneling of the shrine is decorated with medallions which show Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Louis.
A painted panel, dating from the end of the 16th century, mentions the Coronation of the Virgin.
